LECTURE INFORMATION

LECTURE TITLE
What to expect from the dentist in interceptive

Interceptive orthodontics can eliminate or reduce the severity of a developing malocclusion, complexity of orthodontic treatment, overall treatment time and cost. Dentists in general and paedodontists in specific play a fundamental role in interceptive orthodontics. They monitor in early childhood the development of jaws, deciduous dentition, and mixed dentition. Breastfeeding in the first months of life (0-3 years) can influence jaw development, muscle tonicity and tongue posture. Later on, the transition to solid food (4-6 years) requires close follow up of both maxillary and mandibular alveolar bone, habits such as finger sucking, use of pacifiers, oral breathing and abnormal swallowing pattern. In early mixed dentition ( +6 years) close observation of available space in dental arches, exfoliation of deciduous teeth and eruption of permanent dentition are crucial. In this phase, malocclusions and abnormal skeletal relationships should be detected. Early diagnosis and sharing information with other clinicians are the key to perform early and efficient interceptive orthodontics. Thus awareness of the dentist is the first form of prevention.
